Brief History of the Shore
The Shore has been a harbor since Anglo-Saxon times and has welcomed several monarchs, including Mary Queen of Scots and George IV. The area has witnessed significant historical events, such as the Rough Wooing in 1544 when English ships unloaded artillery on its quayside. The Shore was also the first place in Leith to have public street lighting, initially with oil lamps in 1771 and later with electric lights in 1895.
